Natalie Portman makes her directorial debut with this imaginative adaptation of Amos Oz’s award winning autobiographical novel. Set amidst the turbulent birth pangs of the state of Israel, Portman plays Fania, a new immigrant who struggles to find her place in Jerusalem. Traumatised by the memory of what she and her young husband have left behind, Fania swings unpredictably between inspiring her son with tales of a far away land to retreating into a lost world.
