While remaining faithful to its literary source, this elegant adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel is an absorbing cinematic experience, enhanced by fine performances from its stellar cast. Roth’s alter ego Nathan Zuckerman is a reclusive author who befriends disgraced Jewish professor Coleman Silk. This friendship – as well as a new relationship with a troubled younger woman – allows Silk to come to terms with his true identity, which he was so careful to hide all these years. This suspenseful drama, mixed with powerful social commentary, does justice to the genius of Roth.
