Renowned Palestinian academic Edward Said died in 2003 but his humanist spirit is very much alive in Berlin’s Barenboim-Said Academy. Much like the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra he founded with his close friend Daniel Barenboim over 20 years ago, the academy, too, aspires to create a place where music, philosophy and humanistic ideals break down cultural and national berries. For the students, who come from different corners of the Middle East, the academy offers a rare opportunity to form lasting friendships with like-minded people whom they would have not met otherwise. Featuring Barenboim, architect Frank Gehry and Said’s widow Mariam – as well as many of the young talented musicians who attend the school – this delightful documentary is a sanguine reminder to us all that co-existence is not beyond our reach.

This film is available to watch until 4:30pm, Sunday 15th November.
