Set in 1984, at the height of the Cold War, The Humorist tells the story of successful Russian-Jewish stand-up comedian Boris Arkadiev. Although he is embraced by the KGB and loved by the masses, Arkadiev feels stifled by state censorship and haunted by his own inner demons. Invited to perform at a party leader’s home, and inspired by the American trend of insult humour, Arkadiev demonstrates just how funny – and self-destructive – his jokes can be.
