As the US prepares to enter World War II, Hungarian-born Jewish director Michael Curtiz is in the midst of a bitter fight with government officials, over their wish to use his upcoming new film as a propaganda tool. He also tries to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter and to help his family back in Europe escape the Nazis, all during the troubled production of his materpiece Casablanca, in 1942.
