The questions in this section develop a critical awareness of film as an artistic construct, and are designed to offer a framework for your discussion. They can be used alongside the films included in this resource or with any other film of your choice

Depending on what you watch, some questions (such as those referring to historical sources) will be more appropriate than others.

The questions are organised across five main concepts, which in places may overlap.

Discuss personal responses to the film considering its intellectual and emotional impact.
Reflect on who produced the film and their intention in creating it in the way they have.
Think about the choices made by the filmmakers in terms of what actually appears (and does not appear) in the film, including the soundtrack and lighting.
Consider the filmmakers’ interpretation of events and how this might reflect their worldview.
Contemplate the cultural and social significance of the film and the narrative portrayed.
