First presented at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Closeness is an immensely powerful cinematic experience. 24-year old Ilana works as a mechanic alongside her father in a small town in Russia’s North Caucasus. When her brother David and his fiancée are kidnapped and a ransom demand is issued, her parents urge her to marry the son of a wealthy family who could help them financially. Ilana, who is in love with a Kabardian man, struggles to reconcile her family’s expectations with those of her own.
